Packing Tips
Pack safely, label clearly and make unloading easier.
- Colour code by room: use a different tape or label colour for each room.
- Label at least two sides: include the destination room and a short contents description.
- Protect fragile items: wrap them individually and fill empty spaces so items cannot move around.
- Don't overfill: boxes should close flat and still be safe to carry.
- Keep essentials separate: don't load medication, keys, important documents or valuables into the removal van.

- Kettle, tea/coffee, mugs, drinks and easy snacks.
- Phone chargers and a power bank.
- Toiletries, toilet roll and a change of clothes.
- Basic cleaning supplies, bin bags and a small toolkit.
- Medication, important documents, keys and valuables — keep these with you.
- Pet or child essentials you'll need immediately.
Before We Arrive
A few preparations can make moving day much smoother.
- Make sure boxes are packed, closed and clearly labelled.
- Tell Move It about parking restrictions, stairs, lifts or difficult access.
- Keep hallways and routes through the property clear where possible.
- Separate anything that is staying behind so it isn't moved accidentally.
- Have keys and access arrangements ready for both properties.
- Let the team know about particularly fragile, heavy or unusual items.
Moving Day Guide
Useful final checks for leaving one home and arriving at the next.
- Take photos of gas, electricity and water meter readings.
- Do a final check of cupboards, lofts, sheds, garages and outdoor areas.
- Keep phones, medication, documents, keys and valuables with you.
- Check windows and doors are secure before leaving.
- At the new home, show the team where you want large furniture and labelled boxes placed.
- Before the team leaves, check the property and vehicle to make sure everything has been unloaded.
Furniture & Appliances
Prepare larger items before they're loaded.
- Defrost, empty and dry fridges/freezers in good time if they're being moved.
- Disconnect appliances safely and follow the manufacturer's guidance.
- Empty furniture where practical and secure doors or removable parts.
- Remove loose shelves and protect glass components.
- Measure large furniture and check doors, stairs and access at the new property.
- Tell Move It in advance about unusually heavy or specialist items.
Storage Safety Guide
Items that shouldn't be placed into storage.
- Flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel, paint thinners and solvents.
- Gas cylinders and other pressurised gases.
- Fireworks, explosives and ammunition.
- Hazardous chemicals, pesticides and similar materials.
- Large quantities of aerosols and industrial/car batteries.
- Food and perishables that may spoil or attract pests.
